Fall risk and nutrional status. What
is the link? It makes
sense when you think about it. Poor nutrition sparks muscle and
weight loss. Cross Chiropractic Center carefully checks our
older Sandy Springs chiropractic patients at risk for falls, especially their nutritional status. Cross Chiropractic Center is
concerned about fall prevention!
NUTRITIONAL STATUS BEFORE FALLS
Researchers attempted to describe
the association between nutritional status and body mass
index (BMI) and fall risk and recurrent fall risk in older people
who reside in community settings. They found that
malnourished patients and those at risk for malnourishment had
a 45% higher risk of experiencing at least 1 fall. (1)
Verifying BMI and nutritional status is relatively
easy to do. Cross Chiropractic Center does it to protect
our Sandy Springs chiropractic patients!
Sandy Springs FALL RISK AND MALNUTRITION
Fall risk assessments have often disregarded
nutritional status instead focusing on issues like balance
and fall risk-increasing drugs.
Nutritional status is influential,
too. Malnutrition leads to weight loss which prompts
muscle weakness which leads to an increase in fall risk. It’s truly
a ripple effect! A recent study documented
that malnutrition was significantly linked with high fall risk
according to several leading fall risk assessment
tools (especially the Johns Hopkins fall risk assessment
tool). (2) Preventing falls is optimal. Recovering from falls is important.
NUTRITIONAL STATUS AND RECOVERY AFTER FALLS
Poor nutritional status in older adults especially those with a history of falling sets them up
for higher risk of inferior recovery from a fall.
Nearly a third of community-dwelling adults with a history
of falling were either currently malnourished or at risk of
malnourishment. Enhancing the nutritional status of those who experienced
a fall increased their physical
performance. (3) Cross Chiropractic Center understands nutrition and is prepared
to assist our at-risk patients correct theirs!
